NFR Main Events

NFR has 7 major events. Each event has its rewards that are awarded and those rewards are determined by the rank of each of the top competitors relative to the overall prize pool of the event.

People in the top-six of a particular event are paid accordingly, while those in the top-eight of the overall NFR are paid accordingly. The main events of the NFR are as follows:

Bareback Riding

Riding a horse using bareback rigging is the primary way to stay on top of a horse. This grip is often compared to hanging on to a suitcase handle, and a cowboy is wildly made for the sole support on a bucking horse. An 8-second ride constitutes a worthy ride and the cowboys are judged on their riding technique.

Steer Wrestling

The steer wrestler, alternatively known as a “bulldogger”, brings a fast-moving steer to a halt on its back as fast as possible. Speed and strength are the names of the game in steer wrestling. In fact, with a world record sitting at 2.4 seconds, steer wrestling is the quickest event in rodeo.

The objective of the steer wrestler is to use strength and technique to wrestle a steer to the ground as quickly as possible.

Team Roping

Team roping, the only true team event in NFR, requires close cooperation and timing between two highly skilled ropers – a header and a heeler – and their horses.

The Headers

One of the members of the team whose job is to successfully tie the steer’s head to one of the three tries as quickly as possible; Around both horns, one horn and the head, or around the neck.

The Heelers

One of two horseback team members whose job is to successfully rope the hind legs of the steer as soon as the header has successfully done its part. The heeler must rope both hind legs to avoid a 5-second penalty for roping only one hind leg.

Saddle Bronc Riding

Like Bareback Riding, the goal of the cowboy behind the horse is to keep the horse in balance for as long as possible for 8 seconds. In this event, however, the cowboy sits on a saddle while using one hand to hold a thick bridle attached to the horse’s halter.

Tie-Down Roping

This event is a cowboy on horseback who tries to stop a calf by throwing a rope loop attached to the cowboy’s horse. As both the cowboy and the calf move away from a certain starting point, the calf gets a little head-scratching.

After unloading the cowboy relies on the horse to soothe any looseness in the rope, then proceeds to tie the calf as quickly as possible.

Barrel Racing

This is a women’s event where cowgirls run anticlockwise to complete the strategically set course where the barrels are set as landmarks. The goal of the Cowgirls is to complete the Cloverleaf-shaped race as fast as possible near 3 barrels in a triangular structure. Accidentally dropping barrels results in a 5-second penalty.

Bull Riding

The main purpose of the cowboy on the bull is to stay on top and keep them in balance for 8 seconds. They are judged based on strategy and can earn extra points by sparring while driving the bull.

The cowboy sits on top of the bull holding a flat braided rope, which is wrapped around the bull’s chest.

All-Around Champion

This is an honor to be crowned as the All-Around Champion. To receive this honor, the Cowboys must have won the highest prize money in a given year and competed in at least 2 NFR events, earning at least $ 3,000 in each of those events. It is widely known as the highest honor bestowed by the PRCA.

NFR 2024 Contestants

The 2024 NFR will feature 120 top cowboys from across the United States competing for the world championship title. For the most accurate and up-to-date list of National Finals Rodeo Contestants 2024, please visit the official NFR website.

Cowboy Christmas

For those who need a break from the high-energy NFR events, Cowboy Christmas offers a more relaxed experience. This shopping extravaganza features hundreds of exhibitors from the US and Canada, showcasing a wide range of Western products.

Traditionally held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Cowboy Christmas took place in Arlington, TX, in 2020. Exhibitors had the option to participate or not in that year’s event.

NFR 2024 Standings

The 2024 NFR has been highly competitive as many top cowboys are gaining pride. Stetson Wright sits at the top of the all-around standings and many experts believe he is going to win his second consecutive all-around title.

There will be a lot of close competition and many world championships could come down on the last day. You can check the current location here.

NFR Prize Money

The total pay-out for the entire event was $10 million and will increase to $13.3 million in 2023. After that, the amount will be adjusted and will remain in force for the next five years All 120 eligible contestants will receive 10,000 as part of the participation.
